Hello all, I just signed up for Direct tv w/tivo service. I have a couple of questions. Is there a way to set up the tivo w/ my wireless G network? So I can transfer recorded shows to my PC and burn them to DVD. Second is there a way to increase my hard drive space?

DirecTV does not enable the USB connectors, so you won't get networking without some hacking. Getting video off is even harder.
Upgrade the drive is easy, I've written up a guide here:
http://www.pvrblog.com/pvr/2003/07/preparing_an_up.html
Of course, now that I think about it, you could get a PVTnet drive for your DirecTiVo and get both an upgrade drive and networking enabled on your box:

Yes and yes.
The first requires hacking the unit.
Upgrading the drive is easier - you can do it yourself, or buy a kit. Like Matt said, PTVUpgrade.com offers a ready-to-install upgrade with hacks already in place for networking.
And there are more sources of info here:

Do "Dish Netork" and "DirectTV" use the same time of DVR (PVR) boxes?
Any links to hacking the Dish Nework DishDVR 625/522?

I, too am interested in buring programs from my Dish DVR. Any suggestions?
Posted by: Chad at Sep 29, 2005 11:35:42 AM
Yes you can hack the unit for extraction, but the only way you are going to get Wireless G working is to use a wired USB/ethernet adapter and plug into a Wireless G Bridge.

I know it possible to just hook up th cables to your TV tuner card but that takes a long time. Any help with hooking up my 625 to my pc via USB would be great. Thanks

I add my request for information about the 625 also. I verified that the USB port is active by plugging a USB Flash drive into the port. The drive lite flashed a few times, indicating to me at least that the port is working. I pulled that device and plugged in a D-Link DWL-122. Hoping against hope that, that would lead me somewhere. Thus far, no.
I have a PC with XP and a Mac with OSX (Tiger). I sure would like to be able to pull my recorded programs from that [Dish Network 625] PVR.
Just to through one more wrench into the works, I ALSO have a New ReplayTV 4500 that I'd like to somehow put into the mix if possible.
I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas or leads. I just can't get my mind around this ..
Thank you for your consideration and help.

I'm on the ban wagon, is there a way to get video fies off the 625 HD, without opening the case, removing the HD, and putting it in your PC? I've read there is software to extract the files at that point.
Is there a way to use a linksys usb wirless adapter to acces the HD, then use the extraction program to retrieve the viedeos? or any other way short of removing the HD every time?

Here Here, I have a ton of shows recorded on my Dish 625 and would love to pull them off as files to store on a harddrive. I've scoured the internet and have not been able to find any hacks or mods to access the thing through the USB, but I sure hope somebody who has it figured out will let us know.

Has anyone thought of maybe making a hack for the pocket dish recorder? Since it connect to the DVR and pull out programs a laptop should somehow be able to.

I plugged in an external 500gb Lacie drive to the USB port of the Dish 625 and the screen stated "Unsupported Device". Getting excited that it atleast was active I browsed to the "Menu" and choose "Multimedia". While the menu said "No Device Attached" I scrolled up and selected "No Device Attached 1" anyway. The unsupported device screen pops up again, but in the split second before it shows up, the menu changes to something that reads:
"""""""""
Dish Recordings
Manage Device 1
Send To Device 2
"""""""""
This is VERY Promising!! Somebody out there is smart enough for this. It seems to be already setup to copy recordings to external devices.
I setup a webforum for this model to track the progress of hacking this model. http://indyupload.com/trust/

are u serious!? i did this before aswell...but i didnt get that far, as i was in a hurry...what happeneds after i get a show on the removeable?

I used my sandisk 1 gig usb drive and it works and can get the menu, but it says that this feature is currently not availble.
Posted by: laserdemon at Oct 16, 2006 3:35:12 PM
the dish 625 is already capable of transfer of files to an external device or drive, because they work for pocket dish, i.e. a portable media player that dishnetwork also tries to pawn off on us. basically your dvr will transfer the video to any portable media player.....
i will make a set of directions and post later, but for those who know what i'm saying thus far try this.....
pc digital camera (w/ sdisk memory or sd flashcart) insert it into your pc usb, the program you usually use will activate quickcam or windows will find the new drive
dvr usb to pc, now both the pc and dvr will start their respective programs for transporting files from the dvr, instead of using the sd or sandisk card use your hard drive on your pc.
so many other tried and proven ways me and some friends have tried. (Mo-Shimo hits)
anyway i will def. be back here with more info i need to gather it into easy instructions from my egg.
Posted by: kesha at Oct 30, 2006 12:10:15 AM
u never came back... :( have you solved this?
I might go and buy an usb cable with big flat ends on both sides to see how this goes in my laptop.
Posted by: tonhobuffen at Nov 3, 2006 7:30:06 PM
i went to radio shack the other day, and bought a firewire (the wire which has 2 ports so you can connect it form your computer to the dvr;same sides) and i tried it...
i get to a screen which says removable found, then i click on multimedia, and it has the option to send files to device!!! i got sooo excited for that split second, until the screen came up saying multimedia device not connected...but i connected it to my laptop....so i think it was very close.
I did this because the rep at dish network told me to try that, and he said that 2 months ago the recievers were able to send files to computers, but b/c of piracy laws....something changed....i didnt believe him cuz ive been trying to figure this out for more than 2 months! lol
any1 out there that can help us!!!!!!!

Well, I guess I should chime in and say that I too am hoping for a solution to transfer the video out to store on a network.
It's been over 3 weeks since the last post. Any progress from anyone?

I know this might sound tedious, but I connected my RCA Combo DVD Player/Recorder inline with my DVR 625 using S-Video and RCA Audio cables. I just set my RCA to record TV mode while playing back pre-recorded programs on my DVR 625. You the have the video files on removable DVD media and rest is history...

I have connected a DVD Recorder to a combo TV/VCR/DVD player that is hooked up in my bedroom. This TV is set up to be the second tuner on my Dish Network DVR 522.
I am able to burn to DVD shows from the DVR however, sometimes the DVD locks up.
Has anyone figured out how to pull recorded shows from the Dish network DVR to put on an IPOD??????
Not much info on the net.
I did download some awsome software that allows you to rip DVDs, convert to MP4 files, and download to your IPOD via ITunes.
The software is called "PQ DVD to iPod".

I got the DVR 625 from Dishnet in October and have been trying to download the files for storage or DVD burning since.
I'm operating Mac with Tiger Operating system 10.4.8. My most recent attempt was to purchase a USB cable that was A to A (Flat at both ends) conection instead of the usual A to B. Although the 625 showed that it detected new hardware, my mac didn't recognize anything?
Another person I spoke to suggested that I needed software and someone else suggested purchasing an additional DVR Recorder and try the approach that Jeff and Saundra used.
I will keep everyone posted.
Posted by: Jason at Jan 1, 2007 11:03:43 AM
Jason, I don't think an A to A connector will work in this situation as both machines will try to be the host controller. Have you tried using two standard A to B cables with a USB bridge in between as you would use in a standard PC to PC setup? With the Mac OS based on Unix, it should be able to recognize the DVRs Linux HD and mount it. Let me know how this works.
Posted by: Monty at Jan 5, 2007 11:35:16 PM
Responding to Saundra:
In my current configuration I only use a RCA DRC8295N DVD VCR COMBO RECORDER/BURNER and the Dish Network DVR 625. My setup is very basic... 1.Satellite signal into DVR 625 2. Route S-video and RCA audio from DVR 625 into your DVD burner 3. You should route the audio out and video out from your DVD burner to your TV and surround sound if applicable.
Recording:
I just insert a blank recordable DVD+R disc into my RCA DVD burner and select any Dish recorded content for playback.
Viewing:
The disc should be viewable using most standard DVD Player software in your personal computer.
Transfer:
You can use AVS DVDtoGO (www.avsmedia.com) to rip the content from disc and convert for use with DVD/MPEG-4 player (with DivX/XviD support), Sony PSP handheld devices, Apple iPod, Portable Media Players (PMP), personal computers and GSM or CDMA mobile phones capable of playing video files.

I have a question. I have a Directv Hughes HDVR2. I have recently purchased and successfully installed icake-s2dt-62 and ptvnet-s2dt-62. When I first attempted to boot my tivo with the new hard drive, everything seems to have loaded and work fine, except my USB ports. I have tried numerous different usb-ethernet adapters, and can’t seem to get any of them to work. I had originally said no to the USB question in the install, as my adapters are all USB 1.0. I cant even get a green light to come on my USB adapters. I have tried restarting the tivo and am lost. Any suggestions from anyone.?

Jason, Could you use one of these A-A USB transfer cables?

came across this site and thought i would chime in.I have windows media center and pull everything off my 625 dvr in realtime. Slow but works great. I plugged my psp into my dvr and it said "you have connected a multimedia device to the usb port. would you like to view and manage its content at this time?" You can imagine my excitement. I hit yes. Multimedia screen, external devices 1 usb storage. USB sorage screen 1 manage device, 2 send to device. I choose 2. This feature is currently not supported. What next please?

ok...... I thought about it again--- I think we need to get someone that has a dish pvr (the extra thing you put videos on from the dvr).....
and we need them to open it up (plug into a pc) and show hidden files.... I think we need to grab the config files and other hidden stuff from the dish togo thing and put that on the usb flash drive....
just an idea

I have the 625 and am curious if I can use an external hard drive for a computer for extra storage or will it tell me it doesn't recognize it? It says it'll record to an external device. What kind of device will it record too?

I am a happy Dish customer with a 522 DVR, a 20GB PocketDish (only$100!) and an iRiver H340 (A/V Media Player). Here is what I have learned over the past year or more.
The Dish content broadcast is essentialy encoded MPEG video stored on your DVR then a 'chip' decodes it during playback. The PocketDish branded players are nothing but Archos units modified to decode your Dish content in the same manner.
I've tried connecting my iRiver and other items to my DVR and have various levels of progress but none actually work.
Content copied to a PocketDish can be 'stored' on a PC or any removable media and then put back on your PocketDish.
I have had some success playing the Dish content using iRiveter (a front end to Mencoder from iriverter.sourceforge.net). Bum thing is that if there is a SAP the audio playback is in spanish!
This program will also re-code the content to a smaller more managable file for playback on my PocketDish, iRiver and PC (played with iRiveter). But again some content is in spanish.
I'll know in a week or so if my Pinnacle Studio upgrade (with more codecs) will edit and burn my content to DVD!
Still not giving up <>< Shawn

Since the dish 625 sees the usb flash drive, is there a program that you can put on a flash drive to make the dish recognize it as a pocket dish?

Hello everyone...
In Review:
I posted back sometime in the December. Am operating a mac OSX 10.4.8 and was looking to find a way to take my stored shows off the 625 and edit them on my apple....then burn to DVD's for personal use.
Obviously.....haven't been able to get the USB to work and Dish Net has confirmed that the USB port is not set up to work nor will it in the future. Or at least for now because of copyright laws.
So....I have since followed the advice from Lujuan Sandra and Jeff and thought I would let everyone know it works but it is very slow.
Not the end of the world. I purchased a DVD / VCR Recorder from Best Buy for about $200 and am burning them to DVR-RW and DVR+RW discs.....have also tried burning to DVR-R discs. This seems to work great with a few minor problems.
1. When I burn them to DVR-R....they work in my "DVD player"
2. When I burn them to DVR-RW or DVR+RW they work in my apple. Neither situation 1. or 2. work for both. Apparently the code the DVD / VCR burner uses isn't readable by the mac and vice versa......But hey. It works. :)
Next up is to find out how to change the files from the DVR recorder once in the mac to QuickTimePlayer files for importing into imovie for editing. Then burning them back to DVDs that I can watch on my DVD player regardless of mac / windows / tv dvd player.
J.

the guy is a lier he didnt get it to work if he did he wouldnt be such a idiot and at least give some detail but yeah im thinking the same thing as a couple of people if u get some of those files from one of those pocket dishes and put it on a flash drive it should trick the dvr to think its a pocket dish and of course u do have to take in to mind what file system the pocket dish uses cuz then u would have to format the flash drive into that flie system but yeah anyone with updates i would love to hear bout this u can email em at elpapichulo497@aol.com

Guys, I do this ALL the time and for the past couple of years this is how. While I am watching recorded movies, shows, etc (or sometimes while I'm not watching) I record to my Toshiba HDD & DVD Video Recorder (Model RD-KX50). This DVR allows me to either record to its 60G hard drive...OR...record to DVDs, because it is also a DVD recorder. I've always wondered about that USB port, but haven't bothered to figure it out because I have always had my HDD/DVD recorder. You can buy these anywhere, but I bought mine several years ago from QVC (1-800-345-1515 or QVC.com). Since then, the retail price in stores has dropped.
Hope this helps.

Anyone make some progress Yet? I think I have, I am going to try today. I went to the Archos website and started downloading as amy firmware updates and some other recovery tools for some of their devices. I think I may have what I need to make my firefly look like a pocketdish to the DVR 625. I will post back on Monday if it works.
