What is the best way to determine the amount of capacity remaining on a Series 2 TiVo, considering the OS doesn't inherently have this feature.

You can't, without hacking it. You can use the total length of the suggestions as a rough estimate (assuming it's been running long enough to fill up with suggestions).

Like Hal said, the method most of us seem to use is to turn on TiVo Suggestions and over time the fill the space and act as a rough indicator.

The TiVo manual gives you the ratio of recording qualities to their storage sizes. For instance, best quality takes 3x the size of basic.
Knowing the ratios, a half hour of basic takes 372 mb. You can then figure how many hours of each you have and use the ratios to figure total used.
