DVD Burner Compatible with TiVo

I have a directv/Tivo box that has a feature that allows you to "transfer to vcr." Can I hook up a dvd burner instead of a vcr?

I'm not sure of the answer, but I'm curious about that as well. I bet you can do this, but you're probably limited to analog RCA (and maybe S-video) jacks to do it.

I've got my S1 Tivo hooked up to a Pioneer standalone DVD burner without any problems. The hookup is over S-Video, not a direct digital connection. Note that even with a VCR, you have to manually start the recording device, but the combo works pretty well for transferring material to disc. You probably want to do the initial Tivo recordings at high or best quality, as you'll be reencoding MPEG-2 and the recordings won't look as good as through the DVD recorder's own tuner.

Yeah, as has been said, you can hook it up just like a VCR - S-Video will give you the best quality, then RCA (composite), and finally RF.

Alternatively you can wait and see if DirecTV wises up and offers networking and TiVoToGo (one can dream), or hack your box to extract the video to a PC digitally to burn there.

I also would like to do this. I have an RCA Direct TV DVR-80
which has a USB port in the rear. Could I just plug it in to the back of a PC?

I have a Dish Network DVR and just bought a radio shack connection that allows me to go from the DVR to a USB connection on the back of my laptop which has a DVDR. Any advice or is recording a movie and transferring it to be burned on the DVD a no brainer??

Carl,

RE: Converter you bought from Radio Shack. Per your post, it's supposed to allow you to transfer data via the Dish Network DVR's USB port to your laptop USB port...
I'm looking for a converter like this and it would be great to know if this actually worked for you and some more info on the device.

Can you please elaborate on the converter/device that you bought? Manufacturer, specs, Product number, etc?

Thanks

The Dish network DVR is allowing this usb function , the Tivo via Direct TV does not allow this function and is inherintly blocked, though Tivo without Direct TV allows and posts programing and gives setup information.

Do you have the part number of the Radio Shack converter you are talking about?

I have hooked up the Tivo to a Sony DVD player and am quite frustrated. It gives me (on some movies, not all) a "can't copy-copyright protected" screen 5 secs after hitting record. I tried everything to get the output washed of this copyright to no avail. It no ryme or reason. An old movie like Hunt for Red October is copyrighted, but Lord of the rings is not!. UGG
DOES ANYONE KNOW A WORK AROUND ?(besides copy to VCR first)

I called BrightHouse and asked if I can burn the programs stored on my Explorer 8300 to a DVD Burner or to my computer and they said NO! Only to a VCR! ¸.·´¯)Ricko(¯´·.¸

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.
