That's the question everyone is asking for, and everyone (including me) can't wait to hear more about. Unless someone from TiVo comes forward in an anonymous way (hint, hint), there's no new info that I've found in any news articles. They're still saying Fall 2004, no mention of price, and no mention of specifics beyond you'll probably get to share video with up to 10 devices and there will be no USB dongle.

For that matter, have we heard anything about CableCard Tivo yet?

Also, does anyone know about Tivo2Go's compatibility? Will this be a Windows-only party or can Mac and Linux folks join in?

Chris, all indications I've seen are that it will in fact work with macs, as well as PCs.

TiVo stated Windows and Mac when they announced it, and indications to date are that that hasn't changed. I was at CES2004 and I asked some questions about TTG at the time - of course, much has changed since then, since at the time it was going to use a dongle, etc. Anyway, at the time they said they had no immediate plans for Linux but that they were looking into it. The concern was the DRM - being able to provide that for Linux without people just making rippers out of it. The TiVo rep I spoke to said they might be able to release their DRM library as a binary for Linux and let people wrap it for playback.

I was at DigitalLife over the weekend and asked the TiVo rep there about the release date for TiVo2Go. He said, "By the end of the year", and they were demo-ing it at the convention.

And what were your thoughts on the demo?

Heh - honestly, there was a crush of people about so I didn't stay to watch the demo, since I was already shouting over someone's shoulder at the rep just to ask my question. The one thing the rep said that seemed a little odd to me was that TiVo2Go would allow one to "copy programs to a computer". But maybe that's just lay person speak. (In general, I thought the Convention was tailored to an audience less geeky than me...) Regardless, I thought it would allow you to stream FROM the TiVo THROUGH your computer.

A few of my colleagues work at Tivo: one a LAN Engineer, and one a Marketing Exec. Both assured me the DRM issues had been worked out on the Linux and Mac side. There are new builds supporting H.264 that I've seen and they're stunning.

Provide Tivo2Go for Direc TV with Tivo service on the optional Universal Dock via USB Apple provides with the device (or any DVR docking feature will do) and I will be one of the first to buy one of these devices today.
