Dish DVR USB Connection

My Dish 500 system with DVR has a USB port on the back. Can this connection be used to transfer recorded programs to a computer, and if so, how can this be done?

There are no officially supported ways to do so, the ports aren't enabled to my knowledge. There may be some hacks to do it, as there are for DirecTiVo units, but you'd have to Google for those.

Spoke with Dish Network today. They are planning a future enhancement for the DVR whereby the USB port can be used to output a digital signal enabling high-quality transfer/recording of stored programs. However, it was reported that this "upgrade" is still a long way off, and will require the purchase of a separate throughput device.

I just had a Dish setup, with the dvr tuner. Is there anyway to use broadband to do the dvr updates instead of a phone line? i don't have a phone line very close to the dvr, nor do i plan on running more wires for it. I'm using vonage at the moment and just use a number of the cordless vtech phones going to the single base unit. I am set up for wireless broadband in the house though.

Did you ever get an answer for your question about using vonage?? I am in the same prediciment.

Posted by: Marc at Nov 21, 2005 10:41:25 AM

the phone line is used as a billing stipulation, and for ppv, and maybe using dish home interactive to look up your bill, but in no way is it used for software updates, that is done through the sat conection. however a wireless phone vontage kit should work fine.

my ? is how to hack usb port to trans movies/files?

Posted by: Neo at Jan 1, 2006 5:20:13 AM

I use vonage and dish network, and I use dish networks wireless phone adapter. It works fine for caller ID and the updates, but i still cannot use dish network and vonage to get the PPV movies ordered. I still have to order online even though the DVR 522 box gets dialtone it wont completed the call.

I use dish networks with vonage and I can order ppv movies and get updates and such. I do not have this wireless phone adapter thing. What is that? Have you tried not using the wireless phone adapter?

Anyone knows how to move recorded data from one DishTV DVR to the other or to some other hard drive? Made some changes in the house with new DVR I got and wanted to watch my recorded shows... thx!

Posted by: Klinkel at Mar 14, 2006 5:31:38 PM

If you have a PocketDish player (rebadged Archos pocket dvr player), you can transfer the recorded shows from Dishnet DVR. Just connect the PocketDish player to DVR using the usb cable, DVR will open an interface to transfer the shows recorded in there. Check out the details about PocketDish in dishnetwork website.

does anyone know if there is a way to connect the psp to the dish dvr i connected it and it asked me if i wanted to manage it then it had 2 choices, view or send to device does then it says this feature is not yet supported does anybody know when it will be supported and if there is a wasy to do it now

Posted by: billy at May 12, 2006 5:54:28 PM

I just got off the phone with Dish. They said that the only way to have that usb port on the back of the system enabled is by using the pocket dish. There is just not enough room on the receiver for all the movies I want to record. I guess I might have to open it up and check things out. Anyone know if there is just a standard ide hard drive in it or what?

Posted by: Someone at Jun 10, 2006 7:57:28 PM

Yup, standard IDE drive - Western Digital 120GB if I remember right. I was going to hook it up to a PC but it had an annoying little warranty sticker on it - maybe when the warranty is up I'll try it.

Does anyone know if you can transfer video from a PocketDish to a computer? I read that to transfer from computer to PocketDish you access the PocketDish like an external hard drive, so could you transfer video from a dish receiver to a PocketDish and then to a computer?

Posted by: flattery at Jul 19, 2006 1:10:37 PM

In case anyone didn't already know it, Dish Network charges for not having a phone line because in the middle of the night, they upload your viewing habbits and get paid for them by Neilson (big brother). So don't buy into that crap that you get updates through the phone line or "need" it for pay-per-view and interactive programming.

Posted by: Isaac at Aug 3, 2006 6:48:01 PM

I don't think Dish Network is doing anything other than just checking the dialtone in the middle of the night. I have a vonage line connected to my DVR and I do not see any call being made by the DVR as these calls would show up in my recent call list in vonage site. But one thing is sure, if during the night, my internet connection is broken, next day morning I will see the message on my TV that connect your phone line or pay $5 per month.

Posted by: Rajeev at Aug 17, 2006 10:28:56 AM

There was apparantly a recent software update coinciding with the release of the PocketDish. Somewhere in your MENU you will see a Multimedia option. It will allow you to access things connected to the USB port. When I connected a standard USB thumbdrive, it recognized the drive, and the prompt changed to something like "(1)manage media...(2)transfer media" didn't go through with the upload, as I didn't have any room on the stick, and didn't have more time to play. I'm going to try it out with a different stick tonight, though. not sure how much will fit on an empty 1gb stick if it allows the transfer, or what format it'll be in. We'll see.

Posted by: JiK at Aug 21, 2006 9:49:40 AM

I plugged a USB drive in to the back and the receiver auto-recognized it and brought up the same menu as if you went to Menu>Multimedia. When you select Transfer Media it says that the feature is not yet enabled. I am guessing this is because its not the DishPlayer. So what we need to figure out is:

1. Is there a way to spoof the DishPlayer with a generic USB drive? A file that can be placed in the root of the drive? A naming convention for the device?

2. The video on the DVR harddrive is encrypted. Is it still encrypted on the DishPlayer? Is there decrypt program out there similar to DeCSS for DVD?

Posted by: jackstraw at Aug 22, 2006 5:52:57 PM

I tried hooking my sony psp to the usb port and got the same results. There has to be a way to get the shows off the drive without purchasing a PocketWaste of money.

Posted by: Damon at Aug 31, 2006 3:11:36 PM

I use Vonage and don't have any problems getting the unit to work with it. You have to have the quality set to highest in the vonage control panel and it should work most of the time.

Posted by: Amos at Sep 4, 2006 9:54:36 PM

I considered trying Dish Network but when I called and spoke with Customer Service they told me I'd have to pay an extra $5 a month because I use Vonage. I have 3 questions for all those running Dish with Vonage.

1). Did you tell them you had Vonage when you signed up?
2). Was there something special you had to do to get your system working. (Take it to a neighbors with a normal phone line, etc.)
3). Is there a specific receiver/dvr I need to get this to work with Vonage?

Posted by: Clusterman at Sep 6, 2006 3:19:49 AM

Mine works fine with Vonage as well. I have my Vonage adapter connected to my house phone circuit and just plug my DVR into the closest outlet. My DVR is a 522.

Posted by: Stick at Sep 6, 2006 10:17:38 AM

A friend of mine has DirecTv w/ dvr. He was able to purchase a larger *customized* (mod) hard drive on ebay and he changed it out.
We managed to get the data off via: USB > ethernet adapter > cat5 > wireless router. So, there is a way to do it. I'll try to contact the seller & ask him what he did.
Naturally I tried this on my dish network box the moment I got home & it didn't work, as expected.
Does someone have a PocketDish that they can navigate on their computer? Show hidden files? Details of a .bat file? Is there an Autorun file? ANYTHING?

Posted by: Dave at Sep 9, 2006 1:32:05 PM

About getting the content off your 522 PVR... I did this, and it worked. Sort of. First off, you have to unscrew the top off it. There's a sticker that warns if you tamper with it you void your warranty. I didn't tamper with it. I merely unplugged the hard drive IDE cable, unplugged the hard drive power cable, then plugged it into my DVD-ROM ribbon on my home PC. Since the DVD was set up as MASTER the drive was recognized as soon as I booted.

However...

Just because the drive is there doesn't mean you have access to it in Windows. This is because the PVR's operating system is Linux, which uses a different file format. It's "technically" there, but you can only see it by going to Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management. There you will see three partions. The biggest one is your recorded content.

So next you have to mount the drive in windows, which is the only way to make it come up as a drive. I wish I could remember the command to mount it. I think I had to download a program and mount in DOS at the command line. This made the drive readable to my computer. But then I just had a series of files with TSP extensions. Those can be viewed by a program called MPLAYER, but not much else. As for copying to DVD, well, let's just say it's about a 5 step process.

Frankly, I don't think any of it is worthwhile to do. Too time consuming. Mostly crap on TV anyway. Read a book instead.

Posted by: Dan The Man at Sep 29, 2006 7:49:28 PM

I read on another blog that the files are in .ts format which can be converted to .mpg with any of a few programs. One person even created his own version of Slingbox on his server and can watch and contgrol his TV from anywhere with an internet connection.

I called Dish today and the guys said that you can connect your computer to using the usb connection if you have an ISP connector. I am not familiar with that but he said to talk to a RadioShack person about it. I am gonna look into it and I will let you know what I find.

Posted by: ShoNuf at Oct 6, 2006 10:40:10 PM

now here is a question ... is there any programs out there that you can install on your pc to make the dish sys think its a pocketdish or whatever , just so you can transfer the data ?

also i dont think i see it in here but you have to enable your sys in your properties to allow it to record on a external device ..

now another option is to get a dvd recorder but then your payin anywhere from 200 to 340 bucks ...

so unless there is any programs out there to make this a easy or cheap process , i dont see anyway around it at the moment ..

so if there is can someone email me and let me know. that would be awsome ..

Posted by: G at Oct 22, 2006 1:04:35 PM

Did anyone find anything out about the ISP connector mentioned by "Dan the man" on 9/27? From what I gather it's some type of add on that would have to be connected to the DVR itself.

I tried using a USB data transfer cable that would connect the DVR to my computer and the same message came up that everyone is getting. "This feature is currently not supported."

I believe the best way to overcome this PROBLEM would be to just create some type of patch or something for your computer that would pose as the pocketdish itself. It's been done for everything else it seems. What's so hard about this?

Posted by: Levi at Nov 3, 2006 6:22:22 PM

For the folks with vonage, try this: Go outside and find your TNI box (main phone box usually right by your electric meter). Open up the customer access side of it. In there you should see a phone jack...unplug it. Next plug your Vonage box into the nearest phone jack in the house, this should make all the rest of the jacks in the house live on Vonage.

Posted by: Bo at Nov 8, 2006 7:41:03 PM

I saw on DISH Network's site they had a download for the Pocket Dish, which coincidentally runs under Windows 98se!
So I was thinking that maybe that could be run on a computer while hooking up the USB cable to the DVR and you'd be able to transfer the files over.
There are other portable units that have programs up for download too, I think one is called "Archios" or something like that...

I need some advice on how to consolidate my phone, internet and dish network services so I can save some money. I am sick of paying my local phone co $135.00 or so a month for their "everything pkg" which includes long distance, a second phone line (for internet) and also includes 6 collect calls at $4.25 each not including taxes & fees of course + $91 for dish network (dish 500 + showtime, local channels and 2 regular recievers) and also $24 a month AARP rate to AOL for internet dial up service.

I am seeing all these messages about dish network and vonage. Sounds great to me, but do I still have to have my Verizon home phone service? Who can I use for internet service if I have dish network and vonage?

Also, does anyone have any experiences with collect calls & Vonage? Someone said I could get an MCI prepaid account for this, but tehn others say no.

This is expensive at $250 + every month, and I want to do something about it! Seems like I sould be able to save maybe $100 a month?

Can you transfer from Pocket Dish to your PC

Posted by: Phil at Dec 23, 2006 9:20:49 AM

DishNetwork uses encryption on their DVRs and on the PocketDish - you cannot simply copy files from the DVR / PocketDish and watch them or burn to DVD. You CAN load avi files from the net onto the PocketDish and watch them on it or on your tv by plugging the PocketDish into a tv, however, which is very handy.

Posted by: jcf at Jan 4, 2007 2:53:13 PM

Actually you can copy from DVR straight to DVD recorder, I've been doing it for about a year now with no problems. On a Liteon standalone that cost me 89 bucks. Still would like to plug in my external HD and be able to transfer....

Posted by: JTAlsman at Jan 8, 2007 7:51:03 AM

Can you burn from the dvr to a computer dvd burner? Does the stand alone burner work without any changes to the system?

Posted by: Bo at Jan 8, 2007 8:38:02 AM

Once again: is there a way to transfer an MPEG-4/H.264/AVC video file from a PC to VIP622 via USB?

I assume PocketDISH works only one way (DVR-to-PocketDISH), and the PocketDISH manual says that the data is transferred in MPEG-2 format, and is protected.

Any suggestions?

Posted by: Gvidon at Jan 8, 2007 10:59:34 AM

I have a VIP 622 with an HDMI output. I also have a Mac equipped with an HDMI video input card.

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

Now you might think that the HDCP copy protection might be a problem... It is. But this little box seems to effectively eliminate the HDCP encryption very effectively. (You do need to by a couple of HDMI to DVI adapters to use it.)

http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/ddd12p.asp

The result: Perfect digital copies of HDTV content right off the VIP622.

Posted by: hblatt at Jan 8, 2007 1:10:05 PM

So Gvidon,

Are you saying that you connect it all in this manner:

DVR ---> DVI Link splitter ----> Black Magic Intensity (which is in your computer)

If so, what are you using to record the audio and how are you synching it up afterwards.

Thanks

Posted by: Nate at Jan 9, 2007 7:39:07 AM

Also, how big are the resulting files?

Posted by: Nate at Jan 9, 2007 8:23:25 AM

To hblatt:

I need to load my own H.264 file from a PC to a DVR and play it. Is it possible?
From what I read here and on the other forums, there is no way at the moment to do this. Am I right?

Thanks

I found some freeware for mounting the DVR drive onto windows on tip from Dave on sep 9 (I'm a late-comer). I haven't tried it yet, but what I’m wondering is does anyone know the file system for the DVR drive? I would like to know since the programs are specific to ext2 (with info about accessing ext3). Also, If I remember correctly, the xbox and/or xbox 360 HDD are Linux based as well. Does that mean that mounting these drives would allow access in the same way? Here are the 2 sites if anyone is interested.

Posted by: Randy at Feb 1, 2007 5:51:05 PM

I've got a DishTV 625 (dual) DVR. It typically is set up to drive a 2nd TV in another room by using a VHF signal (channel 30 is default). It's a convoluted process, but I can download data from the DVR by sending the VHF signal to my VCR and out to my capture device. If you have a capture device with TV input it would be even easier. It's not HD by any means, but it didn't cost a cent to accomplish.

Posted by: TomK at Feb 2, 2007 6:16:15 PM

I too am curious about how you capture audio with that DVI setup.

Posted by: Rishard at Feb 5, 2007 12:57:33 PM

i have a dishDVR 625 and in the back it has an extra audio and video output, so i just hook it up to a capture hardware and than to my computer and i can record my tv shows. It might not be the best quality but it works for me.

Posted by: Kaiman at Feb 6, 2007 10:31:49 PM

Kaiman's method is certainly easier than going thru a modulated UHF signal (I wrote VHF in error earlier) to a VCR or TV input on a capture card. The main advantage of using the UHF output is it can be routed a long ways. My computer and DVR are in separate rooms some distance apart. Raw composite video dies off fairly quickly with cable length.

I have a Zen and I am looking to change from my Cable company DVR to something new. I was going to do dishnetwork but TiVo lets me move things to my Zen. Were dish makes me you there unit. No thank you. Unless some one has a work around??

Posted by: Lupo at Feb 9, 2007 11:37:40 AM

Ok, I don't know if this helps, but if you Select *Menu* -> (8)Preferences -> (6)Record Plus, it brings you to a screen where you see a button for ERD Setup (ERD = External Recording Device). I don't have an external recording device, so from here I don't know what happens. I'm purchasing a DVD Recorder to pull the programming off of my old receiver prior to sending it back, as it freezes when watching live tv, but allows for watching DVR programming. I hope this helps someone out there, as everything I read here helped me out a ton. Thanks so much for all the posts from everyone.

If all you want is to transfer your DVR content to PC, why not use a Video Capture card. Granted, it is not going to be as clearer as a digital-original file per-se. But it works.

Any video file these days are protected by Digital Rights protection techniques. So i would suggest droping the quick and cheap ideas and be content with analog video file that comes out of your DVR.

Playing back a program recorded on the DVR and recording onto an external DVD recorder (real time) is an easy operation. The problem is when you have dozens of hours of recorded programing, "real time" recording is not a practical option. I have a Vip 622 DVR with USB ports and have connected my laptop with no success. I am willing to purchase the pocket dish since this seems to be the only compatible external media device, however can anyone tell me if it is possible to transfer a work-able file from the pocket dish to a pc or laptop?

To get the shows off of the 522/625 DVR without voiding the warranty you need to do this:

1. For greater detail, subscribe to something like PVRExplorerPro or DishRip in Yahoo groups. Those groups contain all the info you need.

2. If you're too lazy to do that, here's a brief description of what you need to do:

2.a. Power off the DVR. The DVR must be off throuought the whole operation. Otherwise, you can mess things up.

2.b. You'll need to take the top off the DVR (yes, you'll need a screw driver).

2.c. You'll need to get a USB to IDE adapter. Plenty available for under $20 or so. It should come with a power supply for the hard drive.

2.d. Disconnect the IDE cable from your DVR HDD. Disconnect the power cable from the DVR HDD. Connect the USB to IDE adapter to the DVR HDD. Connect the power supply from the adapter to the DVR HDD. Connect the USB portion of the adapter to your PC.

2.e. Run PVRExplorer Pro (OK, you should have had this installed before you started taking things apart. Sorry).

2.f. PVRExplorer Pro should recognize your DVR HDD and the shows that are on it. Transfer the shows you want.

2.g. Once you're done, go back and put everything back together in the reverse order.

The shows are in .mpg format (I believe MPEG-2). If you wish to edit out commercials, get some MPEG video editor. VideoReDo (not free) seems to do a nice job handling audio synch problems. I had issues with other MPEG video editors (like Womble) with audio synch.

If you want to play these shows on your DVD player, you'll need to get some DVD Authoring software. In my experience it is MUCH cheaper to get a stand-alone DVD player that handles AVI, MPEG, XVID, DIVX, etc. formats. They cost around $50 and work well.

If the 622 has a Westerndigital ide HDD drive, is it safe to assume you can install a bigger HDD? If so would the 622 recognnize the extended space? I heard the 622 has a 250gig. Would the 622 see the 500gig and report the accurate recording time allowed for standard def and high def?

Posted by: GLC at May 5, 2007 8:24:29 PM

As far as I can tell, installing a bigger hard drive won't increase your recording time. Additionally, whatever hard drive you install has to be compatible with the DVR's firmware. Look for the dishmod Yahoo group. In the "file" section of that yahoo group, you'll find hard drives that are compatible with various DVRs.

So, Nobody knows how to transfer DVR recorded material to a computer? FUCK

Posted by: Micah at May 12, 2007 5:06:22 PM

As was stated in several posts: the output of the DVR to any of your devices (TV, Tape etc.) is analog. Not the finest quality, but it will do. I bought a "one touch DVD" at Sams. It hooks up to your PC (my notebook) and the back of your DVR (in place of your TV), and then you simply "play" what you want to record to DVD, and the machine does the rest. Simple. My problem is unerasing something on the DVR hard drive.....

My first 19 programs copied fine but some programs now appear to hang pvrexplorer-pro. I did a debug log and it appears that the files are highly fragmented. Will the program handle these highly fragment files. I watch something going on with the pvr drive access and the computer access, but the screen never displays the copy screen. Is there a program which will defragment the pvr drive from Windows?

Posted by: John Baumgartner at May 16, 2007 8:13:47 PM

I bought this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100120 from newegg and it works just fine. You have to play back in real time though, but you can get near dvd quality off of the dvr. The software with it is fine too. There's obviously better stuff but for 25 bucks it's great. You can even record your vinyl.

I contacted Dishnetwork and they said the Pocketdish has different software and chip from the Archos 604, It was some lady it tech support and I dont think see knows what she is talking about. There has to be a work-around or hack. I am going get get this to work no matter what it has to be a software issue. Unless someone figures out before me.

I have the VTech 8100 wireless modem/router and the 250GB Direct TV HD DVR. I cannot get the updates or have the DVR call in to the Direct TV center. I have no hard wire phone lines in my house. Can someone please give me easy instructions on how to connect my DVR to a phone line? Thanks,
